FROM THE INTRODUCTION written by Paul Montazzoli -- The surname of the protagonist of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter suggests pride in sin and the sin of pride. What concerns Hawthorne about Hester Prynne is not primarily the adultery she has committed, which even the Puritan rulers of Boston find partly understandable (that is why they do not have her executed), but her belief in her right to live according to her own moral code rather than according to the one sanctioned by law and religion. Adultery is merely the subject of the book; moral rebellion is its theme.
